Christodoulides Disagrees with UN Envoy on Cyprus Talks Restart

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, strongly disagrees with the assessment of the UN Special Envoy for Cyprus regarding the possible postponement of the resumption of talks after June. President Christodoulides stressed that neither the assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the EU by Cyprus, nor the internal electoral processes should be an obstacle to the resumption of negotiations. He proposed a five-point plan for the resumption of talks, based on the agreed basis of solution and political equality. He expressed his readiness to participate in a process even next week, while emphasizing that the improvement of Greek-Turkish relations can help resolve the Cyprus issue, but cannot be a prerequisite for the resumption of talks.
