Pensioners' Union Calls for Institutional Solution for Low-Income Pensions and Small Allowance

The Union of Cypriot Pensioners (EKYSY) is insisting on the need for a permanent solution to protect low-income pensioners regarding the small allowance. EKYSY welcomes the decision of the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare to correct a problem that has been recurring in recent years, where pension increases are not taken into account in the income of low-income pensioners, leading to a reduction or cancellation of the small allowance. The Union is also calling for a permanent formula for the annual revision of the poverty line, taking into account pension increases and the overall increase in income. It points out that the lack of such a formula has led to unfair cuts in the small allowance in the past. EKYSY criticizes the government for calculating the cost of the decision, describing it as “misleading and a product of accounting alchemy.” It argues that the state is simply not losing the €13.5 million that would have resulted from deducting pension increases from the small allowance. Finally, EKYSY emphasizes the need for an immediate revision of the poverty line, which has remained unchanged since 2013, and does not reflect the current economic conditions, such as the economic crisis, the pandemic and the rising cost of living.
