ELAM Leader Criticizes Political System, Comments on Court Case

The President of the National Popular Front (ELAM), Christos Christou, commented on the Legal Service's appeal in the Syllouris-Tziovanis case, arguing that courts decide based on available evidence. He expressed the belief that there may have been a difficulty in securing more evidence, emphasizing that this is his personal conclusion. Mr. Christou criticized the political responsibility for the situation in Cyprus, arguing that the political system often shifts the blame to the legal system. He stressed the need to strengthen the role of the Attorney General and expressed complaints about the functioning of the Legal Service, describing it as devalued. Referring to previous cases, such as the report on the Cooperative, he noted that there were extensive investigations without bringing those responsible to justice. He argued that this was due to a lack of sufficient evidence. Mr. Christou responded to a question about whether ELAM, after ten years in Parliament, is part of the system responsible for the country's problems, stating that making decisions entails corresponding responsibility. He emphasized that MPs make decisions for the entire society and not just for themselves.
