Christos Clerides: "Expected" Decision Regarding Syllouris-Tziovanis Case

Legal expert Christos Clerides commented on the acquittal of Dimitris Syllouris and Christakis Tziovanis in the "golden passports" case, describing the decision of the Permanent Criminal Court of Nicosia as "expected". He emphasized that the non-use of the Al Jazeera video as evidence made proving the indictment particularly difficult, while expressing the opinion that the case should not have been referred to court in the first place due to the need for proof beyond any reasonable doubt. Mr. Clerides criticized the years-long delay in the trial, highlighting the need for swift justice in cases with broader implications. He also noted the lack of convictions in major citizenship schemes cases, while referring to the Nikolaou report which identified many cases requiring investigation. Finally, he stressed the need to strengthen the Legal Service for more effective handling of such cases.
