Ch. Clerides: Outcome of Syliouris-Tziovanis Case Was Expected

Legal expert Christos Clerides described the acquittal of Dimitris Syliouris and Christakis Tziovanis in the 'golden passports' case as 'expected'. He emphasized that the non-use of the Al Jazeera video as evidence made proving the indictment very difficult, arguing that the case should not have been filed in the first place. Mr. Clerides criticized the multi-year delay in the trial, stressing that criminal cases should be heard within a year. He also noted that there have been no significant convictions in major citizenship cases, while referring to the Nikolaou report which identified many cases requiring investigation. Finally, Mr. Clerides stressed the need to strengthen the Legal Service for more effective handling of such cases.
