Cyprus Presidency Prioritizes European Shipping Competitiveness

Deputy Minister of Shipping, Marina Hadjimanoli, emphasized that the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU is approaching with responsibility the goal of promoting policies that ensure the competitiveness of European shipping. The statement was made at the 9th Capital Link Shipping Forum in Limassol, where the President of the Transport Committee of the European Parliament, Elisabetta Vozemberg Vryonidi, expressed confidence that the Cypriot Presidency will lead to tangible results for European shipping. The Deputy Minister acknowledged that shipping is in a period of uncertainty due to geopolitical tensions, market instability and the need for green and digital transition. However, she stressed that Cypriot shipping has managed to achieve positive results despite the challenges, with a 23% increase in the capacity of the Cypriot registry in the last 2.5 years and a 17% increase in the contribution of the ship management sector to GDP. The Deputy Ministry of Shipping is focused on maintaining the quality, resilience and sustainability of Cypriot shipping, with an emphasis on regulatory predictability, high standards of safety and compliance, and support for the green and digital transition. Cyprus is a comprehensive maritime center with a reliable registry and a growing ecosystem of maritime services. The Deputy Minister referred to the challenges of decarbonization and digital transformation, emphasizing the need for realistic and global solutions with close cooperation between policymakers and industry. Cyprus actively participates in discussions at the International Maritime Organization and the EU, supporting measures that align globally and provide equal competitive conditions.
