Chaos in Emergency Rooms: Long Waits and Broken Scanners

An audit by the Auditor General of the Emergency Departments (TAEP) of the General Hospitals of Nicosia and Limassol revealed serious problems, including a broken CT scanner, long waits (exceeding 11 hours in one case), and the provision of medical opinions via telemedicine from Greece, despite the presence of an on-call radiologist. The report states that the scanner malfunction led to patients being transferred to a private hospital for examinations, while coverage of radiologist shifts is insufficient in the province of Nicosia. Additionally, there was a delay in the operation of a new CT scanner. The Auditor General emphasized the importance of providing quality services 24/7 and called for immediate addressing of the problems, while the presence of all on-call specialist doctors of category A was confirmed.
