“Losing Their Jobs”: Bus Drivers Risk Losing Driving Licenses Due to Cameras

Bus drivers in Cyprus are at risk of losing their driving licenses and jobs due to the accumulation of penalty points from offenses recorded by cameras. The Director of Development and Communications of EMEL, Petros Theoharidis, stated that EMEL buses in Limassol pass through red light cameras 60,000 times a year, mainly on a route with heavy traffic. Even minor offenses, such as crossing the second white line, can lead to the loss of a driving license as points accumulate. EMEL is calling for the creation of more bus lanes with traffic lights and the warning of drivers via a countdown timer to avoid offenses.
