Scientists from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) have managed to locate and temporarily capture for the first time an extremely rare Sierra Nevada red fox after three years of research. The fox was located in the southern part of the mountain range and a special collar was placed to monitor its movements. This discovery is the culmination of 10 years of remote research and three years of intensive trapping efforts. Biologists believe that monitoring the fox will contribute to a better understanding of the species and promote the long-term restoration of the population. The Sierra Nevada red foxes are protected as an endangered species. It is estimated that there are fewer than 50 foxes in the entire Sierra Nevada area. Monitoring this particular fox will provide valuable information about the habits, movements, and needs of the species, contributing to its more effective protection. The capture and placement of the collar are an important step in the effort to conserve this rare species and prevent its extinction.
