The historic tradition of the 'barrel policeman' was revived in Athens and Thessaloniki on New Year's Eve. In Syntagma Square, the Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, presented gifts to the traffic officer stationed on the elevated platform. A similar ceremony took place in Thessaloniki, in front of the White Tower. The tradition began in 1936 when King George II offered gifts to traffic officers working in difficult conditions, inspiring citizens to follow suit.
