Farmers Protest: "She talks about cows, they are killing sheep"

The discussion regarding animal culling due to the virus continues with intensity, as Veterinary Services and farmers strongly disagree. Spokesperson for the Veterinary Services, Sotiria Georgiou, expressed her surprise at the farmers' reaction, emphasizing that the culling of animals is an unpleasant but necessary procedure due to legislation and the clinical picture of the animals. She stressed that the European Commission is not expected to change the framework, as these are strict regulations. Farmer Pantelis Panteli expressed his outrage over the culling, emphasizing that farmers are losing their income, while Ms. Georgiou replied that no one wants to cull animals, but the legislation forces them to do so when animals show severe symptoms. Ms. Georgiou referred to a complaint about a farmer being notified at midnight about the culling of his animals, suggesting that there may have been a misunderstanding. So far, 38 units with cases have been identified, and culling has already taken place in some of them. Veterinary Services are trying to influence the European Commission for possible amendments, but have not been successful so far. European legislation provides for the culling of all animals in a unit when a positive case is detected. The disease is spreading gradually, increasing the number of animals showing symptoms. Ms. Georgiou stressed the need for responsibility and composure in managing the situation, as well as the importance of applying regulations and protocols in coordination with European partners.
