Pesticides Found in Cypriot Homes - Research Reveals Risks

Research conducted by the Cyprus International Institute for Environmental and Public Health (TEPAK) and the PAN Europe network has revealed the high use of pesticides in Cyprus, which ranks among the top EU countries in terms of sales and residues in fruits and vegetables. The research showed that approximately 10% of products contain residues exceeding permitted limits. Furthermore, the research revealed the presence of banned pesticides in dust collected from Cypriot homes near agricultural areas, posing risks to human health, especially for children. Traces of Carbendazim, Cypermethrin, Imidacloprid and Acetamiprid were detected. The research also highlighted the presence of Fipronil, which, although banned in agriculture, is used in household flea treatments for pets, indicating a potential source of contamination. The findings of the research underscore the need to reduce pesticide use and protect public health and the environment.
