Phytiris: Targeting the 'Heads' of Factions, Special Task Force Established

Minister of Justice and Public Order, Kostas Phytiris, stated that the government's goal is to dismantle the leadership of organized crime groups, emphasizing that a special task force has been established to combat organized crime and money laundering. The task force will follow the "follow the money" methodology and will be responsible for collecting and analyzing information, conducting legal surveillance, and seizing assets. The Minister dismissed the existence of a cover-up by the Police, emphasizing that it is a "fortress of protection for society and democracy." However, he acknowledged that there may be isolated incidents of corruption, which do not reflect the overall picture of the force. He stressed the need to strengthen mechanisms to monitor and address the connections between organized crime and state agencies, such as the Land Registry and the Tax Department. Regarding the transfer of Simon Aykut to Israel, Mr. Phytiris stated that it will take place based on a multilateral international agreement, on the condition that Israel fully accepts his sentence. Regarding the case of Annie Alexoui, the Minister said that a legally appropriate procedure is being sought to collect evidence that she claims to have, in order to initiate investigative procedures. The task force is expected to begin operations in March, while the Police will oversee the farmers' protest outside KOAP, ensuring its peaceful conduct and smooth traffic flow.
