The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Kostas Fytiris, stated that the security level in Cyprus has been increased to the maximum, following initiatives by the President of the Republic. The comments were made during a visit to the Akrotiri Community, where he met with local officials to discuss security issues. Mr. Fytiris emphasized the Ministry of Justice's willingness to assist the Municipality of Kourion and the Community in matters of security, in cooperation with the Police, Fire Service, and British Bases. The Minister acknowledged the concerns of local authorities due to the proximity of Akrotiri to the Akrotiri Airport of the British Bases, however, he expressed the view that calmness and preparation are the best allies. Regarding the return of residents to their homes, Mr. Fytiris stated that this is an issue to be discussed between the Mayor and the Ministry of Interior. Furthermore, he referred to the issue of sirens, which is being handled by the Ministry of Interior, expressing confidence that it is on track to establish an early warning system. He also highlighted the good cooperation with the British Bases, emphasizing that a high-level security system has been developed to address potential threats from drones or missiles. Overall, Mr. Fytiris expressed optimism about the restoration of normality in the area, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and preparation.
