Phytiris: Maximum Security Level for Critical Infrastructure in Cyprus

Minister of Justice and Public Order Kostas Phytiris stated that Cyprus is in a state of readiness due to developments in the Middle East, but the level of security in the country remains high. The police have taken discreet measures to protect critical infrastructure, while the Minister emphasized that even small rumors can affect the economy and the sense of security. Mr. Phytiris stated that the risk of terrorism cannot be ruled out, but the police are taking the necessary measures. Cyprus has rarely been the target of terrorist attacks, due to its policy as a hub for humanitarian and peacekeeping operations and its good relations with its neighbors (excluding Turkey). Regarding the case of the 25-year-old allegedly linked to Hamas, the Minister avoided giving details, as investigations are ongoing. Referring to the Auditor General's report on prisons, he admitted that there are problems, mainly regarding staff, but the report is a “guide” for solving the issues. Operational crisis management protocols have already been implemented in prisons since January 25th.
