Von der Leyen: Provisional Application of EU-Mercosur Agreement

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that the European Union will provisionally apply the trade agreement with the Mercosur countries, despite strong opposition from France. The decision was made after discussions with member states and Members of the European Parliament, and the Commission will proceed with the provisional application of the agreement. The French Minister of Agriculture, Anne Genevard, expressed her regret for the decision, describing it as “very damaging” to the functioning of EU institutions and the spirit of European institutions. Genevard denounced the provisional application of the agreement and stressed that it does not respect the decision of the European Parliament. The agreement between Mercosur and the EU, signed in mid-January, creates one of the largest free trade zones in the world. It allows the EU to increase exports of vehicles, machinery and agricultural products to Latin America and facilitates imports from South America. However, the agreement has been criticized for potential impacts on European agriculture. The implementation of the agreement had previously been suspended following a vote by Members of the European Parliament, who appealed to the EU Court of Justice to confirm its compatibility with European treaties. The European Commission, however, retained the possibility of provisional application of the agreement, which was done by Argentina and Uruguay.
