Farmers Fear Blanket Vaccination Against Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Cyprus

Cypriot livestock farmers are expressing reservations about the potential for a blanket vaccination of the animal population against foot-and-mouth disease. Their concerns center on the possible degradation of Cyprus' epidemiological status, similar to that of Turkish Cypriots or countries with lower veterinary standards. Experts from the European Commission are in Cyprus to assess the situation and propose further measures. Discussions with farmers focus on informing them about the vaccination program and protective measures, but also on their concerns about the disposal of their products. So far, no new cases of foot-and-mouth disease have been reported, and vaccinations are progressing gradually in zones around confirmed cases, with particular attention to protecting pigs. The final decision on blanket vaccination is expected in two weeks.
