Phidias Panagiotou: Data Protection Authority Requests Immediate Suspension of 'Agora' Platform – The Reason

The Data Protection Authority has requested the immediate suspension of the digital platform “Agora,” created by MEP Phidias Panagiotou, in order to complete the assessment of its compliance with European and national legal frameworks for the protection of personal data. Data Protection Commissioner, Maria Christofidou, states that the Authority is acting within its remit, based on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and relevant Cypriot legislation. The letter to the legal representatives of the MEP requests the suspension of the platform’s operation until a positive opinion is issued after the assessment of the Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA). The Authority emphasizes that compliance with the data protection framework is a legal obligation, not a choice. It expects written confirmation of the temporary suspension of the application and conveys that it will take further action if deemed necessary. This decision highlights the importance of protecting personal data and the obligation to comply with the relevant legal framework.
