Tal Dillian Case: “Illegal Use of Spyware is Unacceptable,” Says Commission

The European Commission stated that any attempt to illegally access citizens' data, including journalists and political opponents, is unacceptable, responding to statements by Intellexa founder Tal Dillian regarding the Predator spyware. Dillian had argued that his company provides its technology only to governments and law enforcement agencies. Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert noted that the Commission is aware of the Greek court's decision and that its position is clear: illegal access to citizens' data is unacceptable. He also recalled the European Media Freedom Act, which includes guarantees against the use of spyware against journalists. Asked whether the case would be included in the next EU rule of law report, the Commission spokesperson avoided pre-judging the content of the report, which is usually published around the middle of the year.
