Abbacum Monastery Case: Supreme Court Questions Legality of Evidence

Published February 9, 2026, 17:31

The Supreme Court has expressed doubts about the legality of the detention of evidence from the Holy Monastery of Abbakum two years ago. The Court found that the securing of the evidence did not take place as part of a police investigation, but through voluntary delivery by the Metropolis of Tamassos and Oreini. The monastery's lawyer, Eustathios Eustathiou, stated that the Supreme Court's decision recognizes serious issues of legality and that the Monastery has rights protected by the Constitution and European law. He emphasized that the evidence concerns the private life of the monks and includes sensitive personal and religious data.
