Cabinet Approves Program for Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Livestock Farming

The Cypriot Cabinet has approved a new national program to monitor and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from livestock farming. The program, titled “Monitoring and Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Livestock Farming,” will be implemented from 2026 to 2028 with a budget of €1.15 million, funded by national resources through the Agricultural Research Institute. The program builds on the expertise and infrastructure developed within a previous project funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility. This earlier project enabled an updated recalculation of emissions from agriculture, leading to significant cost savings for the country through the emissions trading system. The new program aims to accurately measure livestock emissions and develop targeted policy measures to reduce them. The research will also contribute to the scientific evidence base for integrating effective interventions and management measures with a measurable climate footprint. The implementation of the program is expected to contribute to the achievement of the national goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 32% by 2030, as outlined in Cyprus's Energy and Climate Action Plan. The initiative highlights Cyprus's commitment to transitioning to a more sustainable and resilient agri-food sector.
