Overcrowding and Neglect Plague Schools in Larnaca

According to the president of the Larnaca Parents' Federation, Kostas Kostas, schools in the city and province of Larnaca are facing serious overcrowding issues. Approximately 40% of schools (8 in total) have an occupancy rate exceeding 100%, with some high schools and gymnasiums reaching 159%. The situation is worsening due to rapid residential development, with new apartment buildings constantly being constructed, increasing the number of students. Mr. Kostas emphasized that the government has neglected school infrastructure for many years, with the last significant construction of new schools dating back to the Papadopoulos and Christofias administrations. The construction of the new Technical School in Rizelia has been ongoing for 15 years, but does not address the overall problem. The main responsibility, according to Mr. Kostas, lies with Nicos Anastasiades and his government, who focused on selling passports and enriching a small elite, leaving schools to deteriorate and be unable to meet the needs of society. The situation has reached a critical point, with schools operating in dangerous conditions and lessons being held in containers. Mr. Kostas calls on the government to take responsibility and address the problem immediately, emphasizing that those responsible for this situation have a name and address. The neglect of education has serious consequences for the future of society and requires immediate and effective action.
