Interior Minister: 440 Housing Units to be Built via KODA in 2 Years

The Minister of Interior, Constantinos Ioannou, addressed the efforts to accelerate urban development in Cyprus, emphasizing that new permits are now issued faster, but there is an accumulation of pending applications from the past. The Cyprus Land Development Organization (KODA) has been upgraded and is expected to begin the construction of 440 housing units in the next two years, compared to the limited number of 20 units started in the previous three years. The Minister stressed that the solution is not to overwork civil servants, but to address the large volume of pending applications. KODA's upgrade was made possible after securing 28 million euros. At the same time, Mr. Ioannou commented on the lack of defined duties for the 93 deputy mayors provided for in the new Local Government law. He stated that a Mayor has the right not to assign duties to a deputy mayor, effectively leaving them without a role. The government has already submitted an amendment to the Parliament regarding the issue of the duties of deputy mayors, but the final decision on the delegation of executive powers will be made after discussion with the Union of Municipalities. The Minister of Interior expressed his desire for smooth cooperation with Local Government and the need for the new system to function effectively.
