Cyprus Approves New Civil Protection Framework and Updates Shelter Inventory

The Cypriot Cabinet approved legislation for the creation of a National Civil Protection Mechanism and the appointment of a National Civil Protection Coordinator. Simultaneously, inspections of Civil Defense shelters were completed, resulting in the declassification of 194 shelters that are either unsuitable or no longer exist. Another 288 shelters have been converted to private use, for use only by their owners. The process of removing unsuitable and private shelters from the SafeCY application is underway. Additionally, the need for cleaning and removal of items from certain shelters was identified, with the Ministry of Interior in contact with owners to facilitate the process. The government is prioritizing the use of public spaces, such as underground parking lots and churches, to create shelters, increasing population coverage from 30% to 45%.
