Pomos Dam Overflows After Recent Rainfall

The Pomos Dam overflowed on Saturday morning due to recent rainfall that replenished water reserves in the area. Although one of the smaller dams in Cyprus, the overflow is particularly significant after a prolonged period of drought and limited water resources. The Provincial Engineer of the Paphos Water Development Department, Haris Kasioulis, stated that the overflow was expected and signals an optimistic outlook for the hydrological situation. The overflow of the dam is not only practically important for irrigating agricultural land but also environmentally, as it strengthens the local ecosystem and contributes to biodiversity. The Pomos Dam irrigates the communities of Pomos, Pachyammos, and Nea Dimos, allowing farmers to continue cultivating and irrigating their fields throughout the year. Residents of the area gathered at the dam to witness the impressive sight of the overflow. The Deputy Mayor of Pomos, Andreas Dionysiou, emphasized the importance of the dam for the primary sector and agricultural production of the region. Water adequacy is a key factor for the sustainability of the agricultural economy. In the wider area of Paphos, other dams, such as Evretou (the third largest in Cyprus), Argaka, and Agia Marina, exist with varying levels of fullness. However, the overall picture of the dams in the free areas remains low, making the overflow of the Pomos Dam even more important.
