MPs Defend Their Positions on Foreclosure Proposals

MPs commented on proposals to address foreclosures, expressing different views on their constitutionality and effectiveness. MP Averof Neofytou (DISY) considers the write-off of part of the debt to be constitutional, while MP Aristos Damianou (AKEL) accused other political forces of hypocrisy and lack of commitment to protecting borrowers. Mr. Damianou stressed that AKEL has submitted 35 proposals to protect borrowers and prevent foreclosures, while accusing other forces of prioritizing the interests of banks. MP Zacharias Koulias (DIKO) requested a discussion in the plenary session of the Parliament on his proposals, while the President of DIKO, Nikola Papadopoulos, warned that proposals that are unconstitutional will not protect anyone. Mr. Papadopoulos emphasized that DIKO believes that the current economic situation in Cyprus allows for the settlement of the foreclosure issue in a way that will better protect borrowers. MP Zacharias Koulias criticized the civil service for discovering the unconstitutionality of laws only when challenged by the state, speaking of selective application of the Constitution. Overall, the statements of the MPs demonstrate the disagreement and tension that prevails regarding the handling of foreclosures and the need for a sustainable solution that protects the rights of both borrowers and creditors.
