Employers' Federation Defends Banks Amidst Debate on Excess Profits

The Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB) has defended banks, expressing “deep concern” over the discussion regarding the taxation of their excess profits. The OEB argues that the profits are not unexpected and that investors supported the banking system during the crisis, taking risks and contributing to its stabilization. Conversely, the debate on taxing excess profits is based on the rise in interest rates, which burdened borrowers and households without a corresponding increase in deposit returns. Supporters of the tax present it as a measure of redistribution and social justice. The OEB warns that imposing additional taxes would send negative messages to investors and could affect the country's credit rating, while banks have already paid significant amounts in taxes in recent years.
