UK Foreign Office: US Did Not Request to Use Akrotiri Base

British Foreign Secretary Ivette Cooper stated that the United States has not requested to use the British military base in Cyprus, where an unmanned aerial vehicle struck a runway. Despite the incident, the RAF base at Akrotiri remains fully operational. Cooper pointed out that the drone hit the runway of the base's airport, but there were no casualties. Precautionary measures have been taken, including the relocation of military personnel families and the temporary removal of non-essential personnel, with the Ministry of Defence assuring that families will be accommodated in alternative accommodations within Cyprus. This is the first attack on RAF Akrotiri since 1986. The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, stated that Cypriot authorities are on full alert, but Cyprus will not participate in military operations. British armed forces have reinforced their bases in Cyprus with drone countermeasure systems, F-35 fighter jets, and radars, as part of defensive measures. While the United Kingdom allowed the United States to use select British bases to strike Iranian missile facilities, the attack on Akrotiri raised concerns about further escalation.
