Cyprus Education Ministry Announces Pilot Social Worker Program in Schools

The Minister of Education, Athena Michaelidou, emphasized the need for a transformation of education, focusing on the development of skills and moving away from rote learning. In this context, she announced that Social Worker Services will begin pilot operation in some schools in 2026. The priorities of the Ministry of Education for 2026 also include the completion of the list of eligible teachers, the upgrading of Special Education with the aim of unified and inclusive education, and the strengthening of the mental resilience of students and teachers. Regarding Special Education, the Minister stated that a bill with amendments leading to a more unified and inclusive system is in an advanced stage of consultation. At the same time, efforts will continue to address violence and delinquency in schools, by providing manuals and organizing teams of teachers responsible for the prevention and management of these phenomena. The Minister stressed that all the efforts of the Ministry of Education are aimed at creating a more effective and inclusive school, where all students will have the opportunity to develop their potential and contribute to society.
