Justice Ministry Denies Report on Task Force Against Organized Crime

The Ministry of Justice has denied a report in the newspaper “Kathimerini” regarding the creation of a task force against organized crime, which would be under the jurisdiction of the Minister of Justice. The Ministry clarifies that the operational command and responsibility of the Cyprus Police belong exclusively to the Chief of Police. The role of the Minister of Justice is institutional, political, and supervisory, with an emphasis on policy-making, overseeing the functioning of the Police, and coordinating the relevant services, as well as promoting the necessary legislative framework. Any other interpretation or presentation is incorrect and creates false impressions. The Ministry emphasizes that the State remains committed to decisively tackling organized crime, with respect for the separation of powers and institutional order. Any coordination or operational team for combating organized crime is not administratively or operationally under the jurisdiction of the Minister of Justice.
