Justice Ministry to Announce Measures for Central Prisons in March

The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Kostas Fytiris, announced that he will present measures to address problems at the Central Prisons by the end of March, including the operation of a mobile phone signal jamming system and support measures for prison guards. He has also proposed the design of a new correctional facility outside the urban area, instead of expanding the existing building. The announcement was made before the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights, which examined the situation in the prisons in light of the report by the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT). The Committee expressed satisfaction with the Minister's approach and will hold a new meeting on March 23 to be updated on the actions taken. Concern was raised about the working conditions of prison guards and the role of the underworld within the prisons, while responsibilities for the escalation of problems after the resignations of Department Directors in recent years were also mentioned. The Minister acknowledged overcrowding as one of the most serious problems and referred to actions to deport illegal workers and implement electronic monitoring.
