Agriculture Ministry Ready to Support Hotels for Private Desalination Plants

The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment has announced its readiness to support hotel units in Cyprus to install private desalination plants. This will be done through simplified licensing procedures and the utilization of a grant scheme of €3 million. The Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panagiotou, stressed that the goal is to strengthen water security and the resilience of the tourism sector. The announcement was made at an information day organized by the Department of Water Development in cooperation with the Deputy Ministry of Tourism and the STEK and PASYXE associations. The event aimed to inform stakeholders about the simplified licensing process for small private desalination plants with a daily capacity of up to 1,500 cubic meters of water. Minister Panagiotou mentioned that the event was organized to encourage the utilization of the grant scheme, which was approved in March 2024. She also stressed that despite the simplification of procedures, there will be no compromises on environmental legislation. Strengthening water security requires cooperation between the state and the private sector. The Director of Tourism, Yannis Kouis, presented data on water management in the tourism sector, noting that the average annual water consumption by tourism amounts to 6.9%, while tourism's contribution to GDP in 2024 amounted to 13.1% and is expected to reach 14% in 2025. There are also grant schemes for water conservation and the integration of sustainability criteria into hotels.
