Cheesemakers: Situation Manageable for Halloumi if Virus is Contained

Cheesemakers believe the situation for halloumi production is manageable, provided the spread of foot-and-mouth disease is contained. Michalis Koullouros, a spokesperson for the Cheesemakers Association, stated that there is no question of an embargo on halloumi exports and that there is no reason to worry about the consumption of dairy products, as halloumi is sterilized due to the double boiling process. However, concern is expressed about the number of animal deaths and the potential impact on milk production, as 80% of the milk in Cyprus is intended for halloumi production. If the spread of the virus is not contained, there will be a large loss of milk and halloumi production will be affected. Mr. Koullouros stated that the timing of the virus outbreak is very negative, as milk production is usually increased during this period. There has been no discussion about reviewing the implementation schedule for the PDO quota, but the priority is to contain the spread of the virus and support livestock farmers.
