Trump: Iran Seeking Talks, But 'Maybe We'll Act Before'

US President Donald Trump stated that Iranian leadership contacted him to initiate negotiations, following his threats of military action and amid widespread anti-government protests in the Islamic Republic. Trump mentioned that “the leaders of Iran called yesterday” and that a meeting is being prepared, noting that Tehran “wants to negotiate.” However, he also left open the possibility of immediate military action, stating that “maybe we’ll have to act before” the meeting. According to the Wall Street Journal, the US President is expected to be briefed on Tuesday by senior government officials on specific options for dealing with the crisis in Iran. These scenarios include military strikes, the use of covert cyber weapons against military and political targets, the imposition of additional sanctions, and strengthening anti-government voices online. Simultaneously, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated he is “shocked” by reports of widespread violence and excessive force used by Iranian authorities against protesters in many areas of the country. He reported dozens of deaths and many more injuries in recent days, emphasizing that all Iranians must be able to express their demands peacefully and without fear. The UN’s appeal concerns respect for the rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly, as enshrined in international law. Guterres also called for measures to ensure citizens' access to information, including restoring communications in the country. The situation in Iran remains tense, with the US considering various options for dealing with the crisis, while the UN seeks de-escalation and the protection of human rights.
