Trump on Iran: Diplomacy First, But 'Lethal Force' if Necessary

President Donald Trump's first choice in dealing with Tehran remains diplomacy, but he is willing to use lethal force if necessary, his press secretary said today, as his top diplomat prepares to brief congressional leaders on the matter of Iran. "The President's first choice is always diplomacy. But, as he has shown… he is willing to use the lethal force of the U.S. military if needed," said Karoline Leavitt to reporters at the White House. "The President is always the final decision-maker here," she added. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to brief key congressional leaders, known as the Gang of Eight, at the White House later today, according to the State Department. Rubio is expected to update lawmakers on Iran, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters. The U.S. has deployed a substantial naval force near Iran's shores ahead of potential strikes against the Islamic Republic. On February 19, Trump said he was giving Tehran about 10-15 days to reach a deal. The U.S. president could refer to the issue of potential strikes against Iran in his State of the Union address tonight.
