Turkish Analyst: “Let’s Share Revenues, Not Borders” in Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean

Turkish analyst Aydin Sezer proposes abandoning the confrontation over maritime borders and turning to a model of joint exploitation of energy resources in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean through the creation of joint ventures. He believes that Turkish foreign policy has been trapped in a vicious cycle of confrontations without substantial results in hydrocarbon exploitation. He points out that Turkey has been left out of regional formations and proposes the creation of Joint Development Zones (JDZs) as a necessary adaptation. He argues that peace is sustainable only if it has an economic equivalent and proposes the creation of a “giant Joint Development Company” with the participation of the EU, Turkey, Greece, and Cyprus. He believes that in an environment of economic interdependence, the dispute over borders is outdated.
