Caught at Agios Dometios and Astromeritis-Zodias Checkpoints: Smuggling Cigarettes and Hookah Tobacco – Hefty Fines

Customs officials conducted a series of checks on vehicles crossing the Agios Dometios and Astromeritis-Zodias checkpoints, during which they discovered duty-free tobacco products. Specifically, cigarettes, heated tobacco products, and hookah tobacco were seized, which did not bear the necessary warning labels in Greek and Turkish. In several cases, the drivers were arrested but released after accepting their proposal for an out-of-court settlement, paying fines ranging from €300 to €650. The seizures took place between March 5 and 10, 2026. The checks showed that the offenders were trying to transport the tobacco products hidden in the vehicle, such as inside the spare tire compartment. This action indicates an attempt to bypass checks and smuggling. The Customs Department continues to intensify controls at the checkpoints, aiming to combat smuggling and protect public health. The illegal import of tobacco products is a serious problem, as duties and taxes are avoided, and these products may not meet safety standards.
