Turkey Claims F-16s and Air Defenses in Cyprus Aim for 'Island-Wide Security'

The Turkish Ministry of National Defense (MND) announced that the deployment of F-16 fighter jets and air defense systems in the occupied territories of Cyprus aims to enhance the security of the entire island, not just the Turkish Cypriot side. According to the MND, this move is taking place in a context of increased threats, such as the use of missiles and drones, and aims at deterrence and the protection of airspace. Turkey, as a guarantor power in Cyprus, believes that the measures it is taking are necessary and balanced, especially in relation to the military activities of other countries in the region. The MND also criticized Greece for its military activities in the Eastern Aegean islands, arguing that some islands, such as Lemnos and Karpathos, should remain demilitarized in accordance with international treaties. Ankara accuses Greece of violating these treaties and undermining neighborly and alliance relations. In addition, the MND announced the deployment of a Patriot air defense system in Malatya, as part of strengthening the country's air defense, following the interception of two ballistic projectiles fired from Iran. Regarding the use of Russian S-400 systems, the MND stated that the air defense system operates in a multi-layered structure and automatically selects the most appropriate means of interception depending on the threat. Overall, Turkey states that it is acting to protect peace and stability in the region, while ensuring the rights and interests of Turkish Cypriots and exercising its responsibilities as a guarantor power.
