Turkey Completes Significant Phase of Hagia Sophia Restoration

Turkish authorities have announced the completion of a significant phase of restoration work at the Hagia Sophia, without affecting the structural integrity of the monument. The restoration was carried out in anticipation of the start of Ramadan, with the aim of increasing the capacity of the mosque. The internal scaffolding was carefully removed without damaging the historical surfaces, and machinery was removed using special ramps and bridges. The General Directorate of Foundations of Turkey assured that the process was scientifically monitored and had no negative impact on the monument. At the same time, it was announced that long-term maintenance work will continue, including seismic reinforcement measures. The Hagia Sophia has been functioning as a mosque since 2020, a development that has provoked international reactions.
