At Least 7 Soldiers Killed in New Attack in Western Iraq

At least seven soldiers were killed today in Iraq in an airstrike that targeted a base in the western part of the country. The base was also targeted by a bombing yesterday, with casualties among members of the Hashd al-Shaabi, a paramilitary organization. Iraq is in a difficult position, trying to avoid involvement in a regional conflict, while Iranian-backed armed groups carry out attacks against American personnel and interests, and are simultaneously targeted by attacks attributed to the US or Israel. According to a security official, the strike hit the base in the Habaniya area, in al-Anbar province, where members of the army, police and Hashd al-Shaabi are stationed. The Iraqi Ministry of Defense announced that 13 people were injured, mainly in a military clinic. The attack was denounced as a violation of international law, as it targeted medical facilities. Baghdad announced that it would appeal to the UN Security Council and summon the US Chargé d'Affaires and the Iranian Ambassador for explanations. Yesterday, the same base was hit by an “American airstrike,” resulting in the deaths of 15 Hashd al-Shaabi fighters. Iraqi authorities have granted “right to retaliation and self-defense” to the forces that were attacked.
