Halloumi PDO Conquers Global Cuisine

Halloumi PDO has evolved from a local product to a global ambassador for Cyprus, ranking second in the country's exports with revenues of €201.1 million in the first half of 2025. This success is attributed to the investments of local cheesemakers, their participation in international exhibitions, and their swift response to counterfeiting attempts, in collaboration with relevant authorities. The PDO designation has boosted demand due to the growing preference for authentic flavors. The United Kingdom remains the largest market for Halloumi PDO, absorbing 45% of exports, followed by Sweden, Australia, Germany, and Greece. However, Cypriot cheesemakers are aiming to expand into new markets, such as the United States and the Middle/Far East, with the support of the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry and trade attachés. The versatility of halloumi in cooking, its rich flavor, and its ability to combine tradition with modern gastronomy make it popular with chefs and consumers alike. It can be used in a wide variety of dishes, from simple side dishes to gourmet creations, and served in various restaurants, from taverns to fine dining establishments. The ongoing effort to promote and protect Halloumi PDO, combined with its quality and authenticity, ensures its continued position as one of Cyprus's most important export products and a recognizable gastronomic symbol.
