Iran Calls for Women's Football Team to Return After Asylum Requests

The spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmaeil Baghaei, publicly called on the players of the national women's football team to return to Iran, after five members of the team sought asylum in Australia. Baghaei accused Australia of holding the athletes “hostage” and referred to a previous incident involving Iranian student victims, describing Australia's stance as “shockingly brazen and hypocritical.” In the same post, Baghaei directly addressed the athletes, calling on them to return to Iran, where, he claimed, they are waiting for them with “open arms.” This move comes after previous criticism the team received domestically in Iran for refusing to sing the national anthem. The five athletes were granted asylum in Australia after secretly leaving the team's hotel and seeking protection from Australian authorities.
