“The Ukrainian Crisis Concerns European Security”: Ukraine’s Ambassador to Cyprus Speaks to ‘P’

Ukraine’s Ambassador to Cyprus, Serhiy Nizhnyk, spoke to ‘P’ about the situation in Ukraine after four years of Russian invasion, emphasizing the enormous human cost of the conflict. He expressed his gratitude to Cyprus for its solidarity, but stressed the need for more support for Ukrainian refugees, especially in the recognition of their degrees, access to healthcare, and education. The ambassador referred to the persistent threat of hybrid warfare and the ability of Ukrainians to recognize Russian disinformation and intimidation campaigns. He expressed the frustration and pain of those living through the war, while emphasizing the need for more journalistic and international attention to human rights violations and the uncertainty faced by Ukrainians. Ukraine is organizing a “Week of Remembrance” to honor the victims of the war and civilians under occupation, in collaboration with 15 embassies. Nizhnyk stressed that the invasion concerns the security of all of Europe, not just Ukraine’s independence. Regarding the situation on the front lines, the ambassador stated that Russia has lost over 1.25 million soldiers, while Ukraine has recaptured territory despite fierce fighting. Russia continues to use winter as a weapon, targeting energy infrastructure and causing a humanitarian crisis. Peace talks are ongoing, but the key issues remain unresolved.
