Water Becomes New Weapon in Iran's War

In the war in the Middle East, water is increasingly becoming a target of attacks, with strikes against desalination plants, vital for supplying millions of residents. Iran is responding to threats of attacks on its facilities by targeting desalination units in the region. According to Tehran, American-Israeli attacks have caused serious damage to water management facilities in Iran. Also, a desalination plant in Bahrain was hit by Iranian drones, while Iran is accused of a similar attack on a desalination plant on the island of Qeshm. These attacks, although limited, are causing concern, as disrupting access to water in an arid region like the Middle East can have devastating consequences. The region relies heavily on desalination to meet its drinking water needs, with a rate of 42% in the United Arab Emirates, 90% in Kuwait and 70% in Saudi Arabia. In addition to direct attacks, desalination plants are vulnerable to power outages, making their protection strategically important. Disruption of their operation could lead to serious humanitarian consequences and further escalate tensions in the region.
