Spain’s Largest Train Drivers’ Union Calls Strike After Series of Train Derailments

Spain’s largest train drivers’ union has called a national strike demanding safety assurances after a series of three train derailments in two days led to collisions and the deaths of 43 people, including two train drivers. The latest derailment occurred near Barcelona, where a train driver lost his life. This followed a collision between two trains near Adamuz, one of the worst railway accidents in Europe, with 43 fatalities. A third derailment took place on the Barcelona commuter rail network without any casualties. The SEMAF union accuses Adif of serious damage to the railway network, which it highlighted in a letter in August, causing frequent failures and damage to trains. It demands that criminal responsibility be assigned to those responsible for infrastructure safety. The Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, stated that two of the three derailments were caused by weather conditions and is trying to convince the train drivers to cancel the strike. The Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, is expected to visit Britain tomorrow for talks.
