Positive Climate at Greece-Turkey Summit in Ankara

The 6th Greece-Turkey High-Level Cooperation Council in Ankara was characterized by an unexpectedly positive atmosphere, with the aim of expanding communication channels and avoiding future crises. The Greek Prime Minister raised the issue of maritime zones, characterizing the Turkish position as a casus belli, but avoided using the term. The Turkish President acknowledged the differences but proposed resolving them based on international law, speaking of 'interconnected' issues in the Aegean. The discussion on the Muslim minority in Thrace was conducted in a mild tone. The Athens side positively assesses the meeting, particularly due to the duration of the private meeting between the two leaders (over an hour and a half) with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and the diplomatic advisors. It was agreed to maintain open communication channels for the stability of the region, while international issues such as Ukraine and the Middle East were also discussed. The Turkish side also appears to want dialogue at this stage, due to the volatile situation in Iran. The dinner that followed was pleasant, with particular respect shown to the Ecumenical Patriarch. The Turkish President offered an orchestra that played Greek and Turkish songs, while the menu included dishes combining flavours from both countries. Ministers from both sides reported a mutual understanding, especially in matters of trade and innovation. An interesting moment was when the Greek Prime Minister showed his rosary beads to the Turkish President and the Ecumenical Patriarch, the three of whom discussed the art that exists in both countries. Overall, the meeting seems to have created an environment of trust, opening the way for further discussions.
