Herodeion to be Revitalized – Full Restoration Studies Progress

Interdisciplinary studies for the protection and enhancement of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus have been completed, commissioned by the Ministry of Culture to the National Technical University of Athens. The goal is the complete restoration of the monument and the upgrading of its infrastructure, so that it is harmoniously integrated into the natural environment. The Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, assured that upon completion of the works, the monument will be protected against deterioration and fully upgraded. The studies include restoration, structural rehabilitation, completion of masonry, highlighting the stage building and mosaics, upgrading of acoustic and electromechanical systems, improved accessibility and a new lighting system. At the same time, the surrounding area will be redesigned with respect for the natural environment. The works are expected to last at least three years, during which time the monument will remain closed. The Herodeion presents structural problems, damage and cracks, as well as biodeterioration and failure of previous interventions. In parallel with the restoration work, a regulation for the operation of the monument will be drawn up by a team of scientists and artists, with the aim of ensuring the high quality of events and the protection of the monument.
