U.S. Supreme Court Rules Against Trump Tariffs

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Donald Trump violated federal law by unilaterally imposing tariffs, in a decision that represents a significant defeat for the former president. By a vote of 6-3, the Court ruled that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) – a 1977 law that gives the president the power to regulate or prohibit certain international transactions in a national emergency – does not give him the authority to impose such tariffs. This decision is Trump's most significant defeat from the Supreme Court during his second term, following a series of decisions that had supported him on issues of immigration and others. The Court ruled that Trump did not have clear authorization from Congress to exercise the power to impose tariffs.
