Do's and Don'ts in Addressing the Issue of Missing Persons

As part of the effort to address the issue of missing persons, a bicommunal organization of relatives of missing persons presented guidelines to a team from Syria visiting Cyprus. The guide includes recommendations on what to do and what not to do when searching for missing persons. One of the key points is to avoid negotiations regarding the provision of information about potential burial sites, as this undermines the humanitarian dimension of the issue. It also emphasizes the importance of promptly handing over identified remains to families, without delays for reasons of “balance.” Finally, it warns against offering financial or other rewards for information.
