The 'Are You Dead?' App Sweeping China

A new mobile application, called 'Are You Dead?', has unexpectedly become popular in China, topping the charts as the most downloaded paid app. The app functions simply: users must check in every two days, or their emergency contact will be notified. Its surge in popularity is linked to the growing number of people living alone in China's major cities and the fear of dying unnoticed. Estimates suggest that single-person households in China could reach 200 million by 2030, highlighting the need for services that offer a sense of security and connection. Users openly express their fears of loneliness and concerns about what would happen in case of a health issue or accident on social media platforms. The app's creator, Wilson Hu, stated that the idea stemmed from his personal concern for his mother's safety, as she lives alone. Initially free, the app now costs 8 yuan (approximately $1.15). Despite its ominous name, which has drawn criticism, the company is considering a change. The app is also available internationally as Demumu and has seen success in countries like the US, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, and Spain, largely due to its use by Chinese expatriates. The name 'Are You Dead?' is a play on words inspired by the similar pronunciation to a popular Chinese food delivery app.
